The Let’s Talk Speech-Language Pathology: Patient Education
Handouts for Adults help speech-language pathologists (SLPs)
communicate more clearly with patients about speech, language,
and swallowing disorders.
The material reflects ASHA’s commitment to developing
information for the public that is understandable and enables
people to make informed health care decisions. Many other written
materials about health issues, both in print and on the Web,
are difficult for the average reader to understand and use. These
handouts respond to the need for clearer, more reader-friendly
information.

In a survey of ASHA members who purchased the Let’s Talk
product, respondents indicated that the primary audience for these
handouts was patients and families. Therefore, the message included
in the Let’s Talk handouts focuses on what patients can expect from
their SLP. While some background information is given about the
particular disorder, where appropriate, the focus of information is on
how the SLP can help patients improve their speech, language, or
swallowing.
The 19 Let’s Talk handouts provide a starting point for
conversations with patients and families. They are not intended
to be an exhaustive description of the disorder or procedure, or to
replace face-to-face patient counseling. Additional resources are
available on ASHA’s Web site at www.asha.org/public for patients
wanting more detailed information or research.
